Steeped in improvised jazz tradition, Eric Weiden is a trumpet player who has spent decades pursuing identity in sound. After leaving indiana university in the mid nineties, he spent years touring: as a big band member (Tommy Dorsey Orchestra & Guy Lombardo); and, with multiple Broadway show musical U.S. national tours.
In the couple decades since he has split his time between Edmonton and Vancouver, leading bands based out of both cities. His Vancouver band, The Eric Weiden Quartet, released its first recording ‘Through Haze’ that features Brad Turner on Rhodes, Paul Ruska on bass, and Bernie Arai on drums. Having returned to live in Edmonton full time, Eric performs around Alberta with Mboya Nicholson on piano. This hard swinging duet plays a selection of jazz standards ranging from the traditional ‘Way Down Yonder in New Orleans’, to the more elegant ‘Emily’.
